SILVERSMITHING SCHOLARSHIPS

2020-24

South House Workshop Trust Silversmithing Scholarships with Rod Kelly

In collaboration with the Trustees of the South House Workshop Trust, developed three fully-funded silversmithing graduate scholarships.

These residential scholarships were designed to accelerate the professional careers of promising silversmiths through four months of intensive workshop-based skills training with master silversmiths Rod Kelly, Brett Payne and Chris Perry.

The training took place in one-month long blocks. Accommodation, travel and tuition were all covered by the grants. The scholarships gave silversmiths the opportunity to learn a variety of professional silversmithing skills in intensive residential placements with leading silversmiths.

The courses covered in detail: raising, chasing, engraving, soldering, forging, hinge-making and hammer work along with discussions about design, marketing and selling.

“This is a totally unique project, there is nothing like it in the UK – four months working side by side with a master craftsman. The exchange of ideas, technique and design provides the perfect platform for young makers to flourish and nurture their prospects and future businesses. Given the limitations of trade support there can be no better training in the craft for our graduate/postgraduate silversmiths.” – Rod Kelly
